What we do
The Cell Culture Service offers infrastructure with different facilities covering a total area of more than 400m2, located on the 1st and 2nd floors of the main building, plus a laboratory in pavilion 11 of the old premises. These are laboratories where the RI research groups and anyone who may require it, can carry out the cell culture experimental part of their research projects. In these facilities and in self-service mode, users can work with both primary cultures obtained from human tissues and experimental animals, as well as continuous cell lines and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) of levels I and II.
Who we are
The Service manager is part of the service user committee, the Biosafety Committee and the RI Quality Committee, which allows her to integrate several fundamental aspects to carry out the service supervision tasks. She is trained in OHS, in the implementation of the ISO Standard and also has auditor accreditation for the same standard. Her previous years of experience in basic research allow her to integrate, in her dedication, the users' interests with laboratory management.
All service facility management is subject to the ISO9001 standard. Authorization is available to work with genetically modified organisms in part of the facilities.

Equipment
Adequate and basic equipment necessary to obtain and maintain cell cultures such as laminar flow cabinets and biological safety cabinets (a total of 25), CO2 incubators (28), ovens, hybridization ovens, incubator shakers, centrifuges (also refrigerated and with anti-aerosol lids), water baths, inverted microscopes, balances, vacuum traps, cell counters, refrigerators, freezers (-20 and -80°C) and autoclaves.
Apart from the basic equipment, it also has special biosafety cabinets to work with cytostatic products and/or nanoparticles, microscopes with fluorescence and image capture, binocular microscopes with illumination and display screen, particle counter, UV stations, nucleofection equipment, spectrophotometer.
In addition, the service has hypoxia stations and the XCELLigence RTCA MP equipment (cell impedance studies), a restricted radioactivity laboratory for cultures, a laboratory for carrying out bacterial cultures and a laboratory where biological samples (not related to obtaining cultures) that require manipulation under biosafety conditions can be processed.
Services
Laboratory maintenance in optimal working conditions. Establishment and execution of cleaning schedules and asepsis control of laboratories. For equipment, preventive maintenance and control (verifications and calibrations), cleaning and disinfection, daily supervision of correct equipment functioning.
Waste management and treatment, autoclaving sterilization of materials used in the service, periodic controls on samples (mycoplasmas, bacterial control) and contamination of surfaces and equipment. Most importantly, they advise and train users for the correct use of laboratories and provide support for any questions or requests about equipment or working conditions and also facilitate authorizations for access and use of biological material.
