The Biosafety Committee of Sant Pau Research Institute has the mission to guarantee that research activities are carried out under the highest safety conditions, minimizing risks for people, the environment, and the research community.

The responsibilities of the CBS-IR Sant Pau are:

  • Establish the biosafety criteria to be applied at the IR Sant Pau and develop and review the resulting manuals, procedures, work instructions, workflows, applications, and records.
  • Assess and, where appropriate, approve, propose measures for, or reject any research or teaching project involving the use of biological agents and/or genetically modified organisms. This includes the use of transgenic animals; human, animal, or plant pathogens; biotoxins; and the administration of experimental biological products to animals or humans.
  • Issue reports and certificates requested by research staff regarding research projects or activities involving the use of biological agents and/or genetically modified organisms.
  • Monitor and ensure that all activities and facilities owned by or affiliated with the IR Sant Pau comply with current legal and internal regulations, particularly those relating to the use of genetically modified organisms, including the measures and procedures adopted for their handling, transportation, and disposal.
  • Promote training, information, and outreach activities related to biosafety.
