Dr Lorena Martín Aguilar, researcher of the Neuromuscular Diseases Group of the Research Institute of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau – IIB Sant Pau, has been recognized with the Richard A.C. Hughes Award at the annual meeting of the Peripheral Nerve Society.
This award recognizes the best clinical oral communication of the congress and has distinguished Dr Martín Aguilar’s presentation on her research in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy with anti-neurofascin-155 antibodies. A study that contributes to the knowledge of the most common chronic inflammatory neuropathy.
The PNS Annual Meeting is the meeting point where the latest advances in peripheral neuropathies from around the world are presented.

La inmunoterapia adoptiva con células T (IAT) ha sido objeto de investigación desde hace más de 20 años. Una variante de la inmunoterapia adoptiva con células T consiste en la modificación genética de dichas células con receptores T antígeno-específicos (terapia CART). Estas técnicas presentan claras ventajas, pero hay algunos problemas metodológicos que impiden su aplicación clínica a pacientes con cáncer.
Para evitar estos problemas, se ha desarrollado un procedimiento de inmunoterapia con células T mediante su modificación genética con receptores quiméricos antígeno-específicos (ampliamente conocidos con el acrónimo anglosajón “CARs”). Un CAR está constituido por un anticuerpo monoclonal, que reconoce un antígeno, unido al dominio de señalización intracelular de la cadena z del complejo CD3 y una molécula coestimuladora.
En la clínica, el mayor impacto hasta la fecha se ha obtenido con CARs dirigidos frente a CD19. La extraordinaria experiencia obtenida en estos pacientes ha llevado a la aplicación de la terapia CART dirigidas a dianas diferentes a CD19, para el tratamiento de otras neoplasias hematológicas. Los avances obtenidos en los últimos 5 años en el campo de la inmunología antitumoral han permitido colocar a la inmunoterapia en primera línea en el tratamiento de neoplasias hematológicas, lo cual supone un cambio radical en el diseño de los tratamientos, focalizados en las células del sistema inmune en vez de las propias células tumorales.
Dr. Javier Briones
Licenciado en Medicina y Cirugía por la Universidad de Santiago. Realizó la especialidad de Hematologia y Hemoterapia (MIR) en el Servicio de Hematología del Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. Doctor en Medicina por la Universidad de Barcelona. Realizó una estancia posdoctoral en la Universidad de Stanford (USA), en el laboratorio del Dr. Ron Levy, donde desarrolló proyectos sobre vacunas celulares y terapia génica en linfoma (1999-2001).
En la actualidad el Dr. Briones es Profesor Asociado de Medicina (Hematología) en la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, y Jefe de la Unidad de Hematología Clínica del Hospital Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Barcelona). Dirige el Programa de Inmunoterapia Celular en Neoplasias Hematológicas y es IP de varios proyectos nacionales e Internacionales en células CART en el IIB Sant Pau. Su grupo de investigación desarrolla CARs académicos para el tratamiento de neoplasias linfoides, el primero de los cuales (HSPCAR30) ha sido autorizado por la Agencia Española del Medicamento (ensayo CART30 para el linfoma de Hodgkin).

On Wednesday 20 January at 7 pm, Dr. José Julve, researcher from the Cardiovascular Risk Metabolic Basis Research Group at the Sant Pau Research Institute – IIB Sant Pau will give a talk on “The anti-obesity effect of bioactive forms of vitamin B3” at the Guinardó Civic Centre. This lecture is part of the series of free seminars offered by the Research Institute at the civic centres with the aim of showing scientific advances in biomedicine and their importance in clinical practice, diagnosis and therapy of different diseases.
Dr. José Julve, the researcher in charge of the Miguel Servet programme (Carlos III Health Institute) at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Research Institute – IIB Sant Pau will give the next session of “Science Mondays” with the lecture entitled “Anti-inflammatory potential of NAD+ precursor molecules in experimental models of diabetes mellitus”. The conference will take place on Monday 30 November at 6 p.m.
Next Monday, November 23, at 6 pm, the conference will be held: “The long road to describe a new muscle disease” by Dr. Montse Olivé Plana. Dr. Olivé is a member of the Neuromuscular Diseases Research Group of the Sant Pau Research Institute – IIB Sant Pau and a specialist in the Neuromuscular Diseases Unit of the Sant Pau Hospital’s Neurology Service. This session is part of the Science Monday cycle and will be streamed.
