Dr. Ángel Carracedo, professor of Legal Medicine at the University of Santiago (USC), researcher and international expert in genetics, has been appointed president of the External Scientific Committee of the Research Institute of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau – IIB Sant Pau.
Takes over from Dr. José López Barneo, Professor of Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine of Seville and expert in the study of embryonic stem cells in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, to whom IIB Sant Pau thanks his work during all these years at the helm of the Institute’s External Scientific Committee.
The External Scientific Committee of the IIB Sant Pau is an advisory body made up of a group of prestigious scientists, experts in different areas relevant to the research programs. Its main purpose is to ensure the scientific quality of the Institute’s activities and contribute to its excellence.
The appointment and dismissal is carried out at the proposal of the scientific director of the IIB Sant Pau and meets criteria of international scientific excellence, knowledge of our health research system and the principles of gender equality, trying to preserve a balance correct between women and men.
Dr. Carracedo holds a doctorate in Medicine from the USC and was director of the Institute of Legal Medicine of the same university between 1994 and 2012. Currently, he directs the Fundación Pública Galega de Medicina Xenómica (SERGAS, Junta de Galicia) and the Centro Nacional of Genotyping-ISCIII (CEGEN) since 1999 and 2002 respectively. He coordinates the USC Genomic Medicine Group which integrates ten research groups with close to a hundred members. He is also head of the CIBERER group (Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Raras) and coordinator of the Genetics and Systems Biology area of the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela (IDIS).
