CARDIOVASCULAR RISK ASSESSMENT IN YOUNG WOMEN AFTER INDEX PREGNANCY WITH AND WITHOUT PLACENTAL COMPLICATIONS (CARDIOMOM STUDY)

Barcelona, June 20, 2024 – Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, yet it is understudied in young women. Obstetric complications during pregnancy significantly increase the risk of developing coronary artery disease, heart failure, and vascular dementia. In this context, the CARDIOMOM study was born, an innovative initiative led by Dr. Elisa Llurba, that aims to evaluate cardiovascular risk in young women after pregnancy, with or without placental complications.

The primary goal of CARDIOMOM is to create cardiovascular disease prevention strategies specifically targeted at women, particularly women who have recently become mothers. This study aims to combat the myths and gender biases to which they are subjected, promoting more equitable and personalized cardiovascular health care.

Study Procedures

Study participants will undergo a series of exhaustive tests to evaluate their cardiovascular health. These tests include anthropometric measurements such as weight, height, hip and waist measurements, and a complete cardiovascular evaluation that includes an echocardiogram. Additionally, blood analyses will be conducted to identify cardiovascular markers in maternal blood, and questionnaires will be used to assess aspects related to nutrition, physical activity, stress, mental health, and smoking habits. Volunteers who present a high cardiovascular risk will be offered the possibility of additional tests, such as magnetic resonance imaging or a computed tomography (CT) scan.

Additionally, depending on the place of residence of each participant, their exposure to urban environmental factors, such as air pollution or noise, will be determined. Participants will also have the opportunity to conduct an interview so that we can understand their health needs after childbirth.

Study Participation

The CARDIOMOM study seeks the participation of 1,200 women from the city of Barcelona. The recruitment process has already begun, with more than 400 women contacted so far. To date, more than 200 women have been visited, and over 100 blood samples have been collected.

This study represents a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in women’s cardiovascular health and to receive a detailed evaluation of their postpartum health.
